Treacherous ShadowsTitle: Treacherous Shadows Author: Jennifer Parr Publication Date: April 8th, 2016 Publisher: Jennifer Parr Category: Young Adult Genre: Fantasy Star Rating: 4 out of 5 Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Aeria Morgan knows her life will be short. Since the Darkness fell two hundred years ago, brevity has staked its claim, especially on the childless. Aeria will die if she does not find love, and soon. But she and her Dviinu brother, Aeron, are outcasts, set apart from the rest of Avalon Valley because of their sordid family history and mysterious conception, and so Aeria has resigned herself to a loveless fate. It isn’t until Aeria meets village newcomer Lyam Trey that she learns that love is worth hoping for after all. As trouble mounts, can Aeria hold tight to what she’s found, or will she lose everything she thought she’d never have? My Thoughts:
Before this book was published Jennifer Parr had released the prologue and first chapter on her Wattpad. I had seen her around instagram and started following her, I learned that she too shares a passion for horses! I found out on her instagram about her Wattpad where I came across Treacherous Shadows and read what was posted on Wattpad. I was definitely hooked and intrigued! I had yet to read anything else by this author and the plot of this book sounded very unique. I was excited for the release of this book and was lucky enough to win a copy of it through a giveaway that Jennifer hosted on her instagram. This book was so well written, she did a fantastic job with her descriptions and I was able to picture everything clearly in my head! Despite their famous family history, Aeria and her brother Aeron are outcasts. Since the Darkness there has never been siblings. Their mother refers to them as Dviinu because they are the first siblings. Unfortunately they are looked down upon and often shunned which serves a small problem for Aeria. She is already sixteen years old and doesn't have much time, if she doesn't find love soon she will die. This is another affect of the Darkness. For as long as they''ve been alive it has always been Aeria and Aeron forever, up until one day newcomer Lyam Trey arrives in Avalon Valley and perks Aeria's interest. Aeron is presented the opportunity to go on a trade run to another village and being that he doesn't get to do much he is more than happy to take this journey on, although, him and his sister have never been apart. While Aeron is away Aeria takes it upon herself to go on a late night swim while her mothers asleep at the local creek but little does she knew whats to come. Luckily for Aeria, Lyam comes to her rescue where there they click and something starts to brew between them. When Aeron returns he is less than happy to learn that Aeria is interested in the new resident of Avalon Valley. He doesn't know him, let alone trust him with his sister. After all, Lyam is a bit mysterious and not many people like them so why would Lyam be any different? What if when he learns about their family history he begins to shun Aeria too? All Aeron wants is to protect his sisters well being, even if that means being too protective of her especially with the new looming threat. This book is definitely different then anything I've ever read before and really enjoyed that. It was very original and you're not going to pick up this book then put it down thinking "I've read a thousand of books like these" because trust me, you haven't. It takes a look on social outcast and being judged by people. One thing I hate is being judged, it makes me super self-conscious and unlike me, Aeria doesn't let peoples judgment affect her. Although when one person shows her true acceptance besides her brother and mother it means the world to her. Which really shows how appreciated kindness is, even if it's just from a few people. A small support system when struggling through something is better then none. I did feel that the love developed a bit quickly. Although it did work. Aeria was so desperate to find love and as soon as she found someone who accepted her for he,r she took that hope and clung to it. I felt that in this situation that it worked and I felt it to be quite realistic because when people are deprived of something their feelings are usually very strong. Lyam also had his eyes set on her before they met, he'd been physically attracted to her before they got to know each other so as he got to know her, his feelings too heightened. But what if their love wasn't meant to be? The emotions in this book most definitely run high and all of these characters are very passionate in every aspects. The ending of this book was a huge punch to the gut and I really wasn't prepared! I eagerly await book two to continue with Aeria's journey and to see how the Avalon Valley series plays out!
