WintersongTitle: Wintersong Author: S. Jae-Jones Publication Date: February 7th, 2017 Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books Category: Young Adult Genre: Fantasy Star Rating: 5 out of 5 Synopsis: Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell. All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns. But when her sister Kathe the is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Kathe the go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts. Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world. My Thoughts:
I had previously heard many great things about Wintersong. It has been sitting on my bookshelf since I bought it and meet S. Jae-Jones at Yallwest 2017. I always look at it to read but never picked it up until a few days ago. I went into this book like I do with most- knowing little to nothing about it. Right off the bat the story line had me captivated and curious as to what this book that everyone raved over was going to be about. The whole fairy tale, underground, goblin aspect of it was quite fascinating. “Once upon a time, a savage, violent time, humans, goblins, kobolds, Hodekin, and Lorelei lived side by side in the world above, feeding, fighting, preying, slaying. It was, as I had said, a dark time, and Man turned to dark practices to keep the blood tides at bay. Sacrifices, you see. Man turned against brother, fathers against daughters, sons against mothers, all to appease the goblins. To stop the needless deaths, one man— one stupid, foolish man— made a bargain with the old laws of the land, offering himself as a sacrifice.” -The Goblin King I do have to admit that as I began to read further into the book, about a quarter of the way through I hit a few chapters where I found my mind wandering and got a little bored. It didn't take long for my interests to peak again and pull me out of my stupor where I quickly became whisked away into this goblin brimming Underground world. Wintersong is unlike any book I've ever read, it would be difficult to sum my feelings up for this book in a few words. It is so full of emotion that there was many moments where I just had to close the book and regroup. There were times where I wanted to throttle the characters, moments where my hear broke into a million piece for them only to be put back together and feel whole again, but just in time to feel like someone took a sledge-hammer to my chest. It's hard for me to describe how amazing this book, you just to read it to truly understand. It's 436 pages of pure emotion that had me completely shook after I dreadfully finished my last word. What I thought I would get going into this book is not was I received coming out. It's pure bliss and I highly recommend this read of great fantasy entwined with a heartfelt love story. Be yourself, entire. When I met this beautiful author, I hadn't read her book and didn't know anything about her except for her name and that she wrote Wintersong. Sometimes when authors sign your books, they include little messages too. Sometimes these messages relate to the book and sometimes they don't. When I picked this book up and opened it to read it, I noticed that she wrote "Be yourself, entire". I didn't really understand why or what it meant at the time but it was intriguing nonetheless, Now that I've completed this novel I understand it. This little saying has really stuck with me before the book and now has impacted more so after the book. Something I really valued in this story is that I feel like I took something from it that can be applied to real life. I really like S. Jae-Jones style of writing. She incorporated lessons into the story line that can be applied to everyday life. Some of the lessons really get the wheels turning and make you think about things you don't think about but should and vise versa. I find it quite cool! The book is overall intelligent and magical, I really cant wait for the release of the second installment, Shadowsong, in February!
