The Mirror KingTitle: The Mirror King Author: Jodi Meadows Publication Date: April 5th, 2016 Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books Category: Young Adult Genre: Fantasy Star Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Synopsis: Wilhelmina has a hundred enemies. HER FRIENDS HAVE TURNED. After her identity is revealed during the Inundation, Princess Wilhelmina is kept prisoner by the Indigo Kingdom, with the Ospreys lost somewhere in the devastated city. When the Ospreys’ leader emerges at the worst possible moment, leaving Wil’s biggest ally on his deathbed, she must become Black Knife to set things right. HER MAGIC IS UNCONTROLLABLE. Wil’s power is to animate, not to give true life, but in the wraithland she commanded a cloud of wraith mist to save herself, and later ordered it solid. Now there is a living boy made of wraith—destructive and deadly, and willing to do anything for her. HER HEART IS TORN. Though she’s ready for her crown, declaring herself queen means war. Caught between what she wants and what is right, Wilhelmina realizes the throne might not even matter. Everyone thought the wraith was years off, but already it’s destroying Indigo Kingdom villages. If she can’t protect both kingdoms, soon there won’t be a land to rule. Disclaimer: This review does not contain any spoilers for The Mirror King although it might contain some for The Orphan Queen. If you have not read The Orphan Queen then I do not suggest that you continue reading this review but you can read my review on The Orphan Queen here. If you've read The Orphan Queen then please continue reading and enjoy! My Thoughts:
For all of you who had to wait the year for The Mirror King's release, I feel bad for you. The Orphan Queen duology wasn't something that I had much interest in reading until I read Jodi Meadow's Incarnate books and by then The Mirror King was just two weeks shy of its release date. My friend had strongly advised that I hold off reading The Orphan Queen until I had The Mirror King ready to pick up immediately so, I waited and did just that. I was so happy to pick up this book only to find out that it picked up right where The Orphan Queen left off. It was fantastic be thrown back in immediately because I think everyone can agree with me on the fact that we were dying to know what would happen to Tobiah! I felt bad for Wil, she tried so hard to put on a tough front but in the end she is human and Tobiah's pain killed her. The actions of Patrick and the fact that she accidentally created the Wraith Boy was something that she felt reliable for and it takes a bit of a toll on her. I admire that despite her down falls and everything that continues piling up against her, she faces her demons and rises up against them. The Mirror King has a lot of plot twists that often involve the wraith boy. The wraith boy becomes something that represents Wil's inner demons. I enjoyed that he was something she couldn't control, like a wild animal. As much as the wraith boy wanted to please his queen and do right by her, he has a mind of his own and often takes things into his own hands. It's always refreshing when a book takes so many twists and turns because it keeps you entertained. Although I felt that because there was so much happening, things were somewhat rushed and I kinda tuned out a bit. Everything seem to pile onto you and it was a lot to take in at once. I think it wouldn't have been bad if Jodi Meadows split up this book into a third and spent some more time developing some of the plot points a bit deeper. Then there is Tobiah. Oh how much I love him but how dearly I wanted to slap him. One. Two. Maybe three time. He wants to do right by his kingdom after some rather traumatic events, but it irked how he treated Wil. In a sense I understand why he did the things he did but I thought he could have done a better job. Even saying that I wouldn't want to change his actions because it definitely kept the emotions running high and ultimately helped shape the book. Their relationship also shaped Wil in more than one way. In this book we get to see a lot more of Patrick and his intentions with the Red Militia forming within Aecor. Wil struggles to gain control over Patrick's little "minions" but despite Patrick's efforts to carry out his plans, others have ideas of their own. We also get to see a lot more of Prince Colin and how he feels about Wilhelmina becoming Queen, after all he is the overlord of Aecor but the people want what the people want and they''ll test all the waters to get it. Not much works in Wil's favor but it's because of her failures she learns how to succeed. I want to go into so much more detail and I'm having trouble continuing without spoiling everything so you'll just have to read The Mirror King to relish in all its glory. I'd highly suggest reading this book because even though this book had its faults, it was worth the read! I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Jodi Meadows left the ending pretty open so who knows, maybe one day we will have more? I know I would love to have more!
